With OSU Keyboard, all I need to do is open the software and press the little joystick thingy. I don’t know about you guys, but I find it a pain to switch from a keyboard for gaming to a keyboard for work. The reason why this is important is that what if I wanted to play osu! in my office but since they have an ISO layout keyboard, do I need to switch the layers? What if later on, I want to change it back? With OSU Keyboard, these problems are solved because we get the best of both worlds: A customizable hardware key layout and a bunch of predefined ones. Osu! has many predefined key layouts that you can simply switch to such as Dvorak, Arabic, Greek, and so on. With osu!, if I wanted to lay down some sweet green beats, I can use Colemak, and it’s not that big of a deal. You Can Use Your Favorite Key Layoutįor example, I use Colemak instead of QWERTY because my hands feel more relaxed on it. Furthermore, some keyboards only allow the modification of their built-in features and do not support downloadable software so it’s worth checking beforehand if you want to “futureproof” your purchase. If brand new equipment isn’t an option, check out online communities or garage sales for secondhand deals or used items instead! Some mice have up to 17 buttons which might seem like overkill for osu! but you can always custom map their functions to free up your keyboard. All you really need is a standard QWERTY keyboard and a decent gaming mouse with clickable buttons for less than $100 total. ExpenseĬustomization can be expensive not everyone has money to spend on extra peripherals! Luckily, most of what makes an osu! The keyboard work well is under $30. A good setup minimizes the effort needed to adjust and lets you focus on playing rather than struggling to hit notes like a beginner because your hand is too far away from the home row or doesn’t naturally move towards it. It takes time for players to adjust to new setups as they learn the foundation of their rhythm and movement. If you have to move your hands even a little bit because of inefficient layouts or awkward angles, it’s too much work! 4. osu! could potentially mimic this by having a separate normal click and alt-click button, but using just one would reduce unnecessary movements from your fingers during play. For example, drum controllers often have two different buttons for each drum head: one that hits on the downbeat and another that hits on the upbeat. In contrast, motion efficiency is all about reducing unnecessary motions. For example, tapping “A” may also activate the “S” key, so to avoid moving your hand back you can bind “S” to a mouse button instead. Skill efficiency involves minimizing hand movement between keys. There are two kinds of efficiency: Skill and Motion. Mirrored layouts naturally match up with most keyboards and handheld game controllers, so it has become more popular in recent years because players can leverage muscle memory from other games. Rotated setups are much easier to adjust into but sacrifice ease of reach the payoff is that it’s easier to hit buttons blind without looking at them because you can just feel your way around. Finally, Direction refers (no pun intended) to whether your hands act as mirrors or rotate relative to each other. The sharpest angles are the best for high accuracy but tend to be uncomfortable after long periods of play. Angle is how steeply angled or curved your fingers need to be when pressing a button (described by red arrows in the above diagram). An optimal setup has keys close together yet still easy to reach with either hand this allows you maximum freedom when playing without needing too many adjustments in between maps. Distance refers to how far apart keys are relative to each other (see the diagram on the left for reference). The layout of your osu! keyboard can be broken down into three factors: Distance, Angle, and Direction. Tablet users are stuck using the stylus exclusively while some players do not even have a tablet, to begin with! Therefore, this topic is primarily aimed at keyboard users. Both allow complete customization on their layouts, but only the Keyboard lets players use mouse buttons for input at the same time without having to buy more than one gaming peripheral. Osu! is played using two different input methods on PC: Keyboard and Tablet-Mouse (iPad). 5 Things You Must Know While Choosing The Best Osu Keyboard 1.
